Here's an odd one, an unusual chance to experience the capital of Russia, with its world-famous sights and attractions, for only $799 per person. Gate 1 Travel (tel. 212/682-3333; www.gate1travel.com) has launched a one-week sale of its normal air-and-land package to Moscow, charging only $799 per person for round-trip airfare (including all fuel surcharges) and four nights with breakfast daily at a Moscow hotel.

The departure dates on which you can enjoy this package are four different dates in April, six dates in May, eight dates in September, and seven dates in October. In other words, this is a fall and spring package, when the Russian weather is brisk but usually quite enjoyable.

Over and above that $799 cost, you'll have to spring $131 for a Russian visa, a price chosen by the Russians in retaliation for the $131 that we Yanks charge to foreigners wanting to visit the U.S.A. And you'll have to submit a fair amount of paperwork to the Russian authorities, for which you'll receive assistance from Gate 1 Travel.

But the total effort should be well repaid by the experience of visiting Moscow. The stay is short, but the visit will be memorable. And if you miss the March 4 deadline, you can make later bookings for $50 more (paying a total of $849 for the package).
