Parliament has finally approved the Portugal bailout by a vote of 137 to 49. The measure was backed by MPs from all the parties in talks to form the new government -- except the Left Alliance.

Seven MPs abstained and six were absent.

The National Coalition Party, the SDP, the Swedish People's Party, the Christian Democrats, the Greens and most Centre Party MPs voted in support of the rescue measure. Three Centre MPs abstained.

The Left Alliance and the True Finns voted against the bailout, but four True Finns MPs abstained. One of them, Jari Lindström, said he had cast an abstaining vote by mistake. The freshman legislator said he suspected that others had done the same, describing the voting situation as "hectic".

The caretaker government's finance minister, Jyrki Katainen, presented the aid package to Parliament on Tuesday.

Finland's share of the loan guarantees in the 78-billion-euro EU-IMF bailout is about one billion euros.
