Ameobi Hits Out At Transfer Rumours

Says he has no worries over future at Newcastle United Shola Ameobi admits he is too long in the tooth to worry about his future at Newcastle United.

However, he has revealed his future is out of his hands.

The long-serving striker is understood to be available for transfer this summer, with director of football Joe Kinnear admitting several squad players may be moved on.

But 31-year-old Ameobi – one of Newcastle's best players during their tour of Portugal – could well see his storied career on Tyneside extended to one last chapter, especially with United's painful quest to find a striker dragging on for so long.

Ameobi, who grabbed goals against both Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira on this week's tour of Portugal, has addressed the question of what happens next after 13 years as a first-team player at St James' Park.

He told the Chronicle: "I'm a Newcastle player and I've got a year left on my contract.
.
"Every season there's been speculation about me. I've always been focused on Newcastle. Whatever happens, happens, but I don't really pay much attention. I just want to score goals for Newcastle."

Ameobi has spent his entire career with the black- and-whites.
.
But with Kinnear going public on talk of reshaping the St James' squad, the centre-forward who rose through the club's Academy feels he can still do a job for the Magpies.

Regardless of polarised fan opinion of the player, Ameobi remains an influential member of the United squad.

He is cited as a great example of being a professional at the club's Benton base and respected by his team-mates.

Ameobi, who was handed his debut under Bobby Robson in 2000 against Chelsea, doesn't have a problem with that continuing.

He said: "I feel I can play football for Newcastle. I think I've got a little bit left in me.
.
"Whichever way the club wants to go, it's down to them. If I'm wanted at Newcastle, I'll play at Newcastle. If I'm not, I'll go elsewhere. It means a lot to be playing now. I'm in the latter stages of my career.

"In recent months, I haven't done that, which is very frustrating. I feel like I'm fit and strong enough to compete with anyone here at Newcastle. Hopefully, I can push for a place."
