Schalke Advance To Second Round

Champions League side Schalke struggled but prevailed over fifth-division side Noettingen 2-0 on Monday to advance to the second round of the German Cup.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the first goal of the match in the 30th minute for Schalke, and Leon Goretzka secured the win for the Bundesliga side with his score four minutes into injury time.

Noettingen had twice hit the crossbar in the early going through Mario Bilger after five minutes and Holger Fuchs in the 16th minute.

The Bundesliga side never really took control of the match, while Noettingen lacked the wherewithal to find the back of the net.

Paderborn scored twice within two minutes to reverse a one-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over 10-man Duisburg in a showdown of second-division teams.

Michael Gardawski gave Duisburg the lead after 31 minutes before Daniel Brueckner equalized after 37 minutes and Rick ten Voorde made it 2-1 in the 38th minute.

Tobias Feisthammel was shown off with a second booking at the hour mark, and Jens Wemmer added a third Paderborn goal in the 80th minute while Branimir Bajic saw his penalty shot in the 83rd minute held by Paderborn keeper Lukas Kruse.

Second-division side Union Berlin moved into the second round with a 2-1 win at third-division club Jahn Regensburg.

Abdenour Amachaibou gave Regensburg the lead after 19 minutes. Soeren Brandy equalized two minutes later, and Berlin went up 2-1 on Benjamin Koehler's goal in the 42nd minute.

Berlin's Marc Pfertzel was shown off with a red card in the 70th minute, but Mario Neunaber struck only the post from the spot for Regensburg, who finished with 10 men when Sebastian Nachreiner was booked a second time with four minutes left.
