Following the decline in cases of gastroenteritis or diarrhoea disease announced a week ago, Ogun state Government has announced a continued drop in new cases of diarrhoea to virtually normal levels.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, "In the week up to Friday, August 2, the number of new cases averaged two cases daily down from a peak of 10 and no deaths have been reported. The outbreak was pcontained early and has not spread geographically". The Commissioner also emphasised that there had never been any spread of the disease since onset, noting that there have been no reports of any infections arising from Local Government Areas (LGAs) outside Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North.

”The two individuals from two other LGAs contracted the illness in Abeokuta and were treated there”. He said.He noted that "prompt reporting of the situation at the outset to the Federal Government enabled them and partners such as WHO and other stakeholders to join hands with the efforts of our Local Governments, State Ministries of Health and Environment and the State Water Corporation.

They were also able to confirm some weeks ago that the situation was under control and the state’s response was appropriate, comprehensive and timely".Dr. Soyinka pointed out that the State Government continues to maintain full disclosure to enable accurate assessment of the situation by all and to encourage preventive measures.

He assured Government will continue to work to ensure that conditions conducive to such outbreaks are rectified enjoining professionals to remain alert and the general public to continue to adopt measures with regard to personal hygiene, food preparation and environmental cleanliness that will limit spread of communicable diseases.
