Russia praises Syria regarding UN inspectors

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has welcomed Syria's decision to allow U.N. inspectors to visit the site of an alleged chemical weapons attack, but said the U.S. should await the findings and realize that a unilateral use of force would be a mistake.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Sunday all countries should show "prudence" about a possible attack in a Damacus suburb that killed at least 100 people, and wait for the results of an investigation by international experts.

France has said evidence suggests Syrian forces used chemical weapons. President Barack Obama met with his national security team Saturday to assess the intelligence and consider a U.S. military response.

Lukashevich said the U.S. and European partners shouldn't take a "gamble" that could have "catastrophic consequences" for Syria and the region as a whole.
