The Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Wednesday raided some black spots in Abuja and arrested 538 suspected fraudsters, its spokesman, Mr Jimoh Moshood, has said.

Moshood, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria, said the raid followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Mr Haruna John, to rid the city of fraudsters.

"The Commissioner of Police directed that all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers should raid all identifiable black spots in their area," he said.

Giving a breakdown of the raid and arrests, Moshood said 127 suspects were arrested at the Garki District, 108 in Wuse District, 210 in Utako District and 93 in Life Camp area.

He said the raid would be sustained in order to rid the territory of fraudsters "who use unpainted commercial vehicles to defraud unsuspecting commuters."

The fraudsters are referred to in local parlance as "one chance."

Moshood said the command would continue the raid until the last "one chance'' suspect was removed from the FCT.

"This time round, we want to ensure that all the suspects found with weapons, whether cutlass, knife or even string used in entangling people, are charged with robbery," he said.

Moshood disclosed that all those arrested were being screened to free those who were "unfortunate to have been found at the black spots."
