National Sports Commission to include Squash in National Youth Games

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Gbenga Elegbeleye has hinted that the Commission will consider the inclusion of squash in the coming National Youth Games (NYC).

He made this known on Thursday 26th September, 2013 when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) led by its President, Adamu Erena in his office at the Abuja National Stadium.

Gbenga Elegbeleye noted that the NSC will expedite support to Sports Federations that are making impacts in their field of sports. He explained that sports play important roles in boosting the image of a country, saying sports more than anything else is now a major determinant of international politics, especially in the area of re-branding. He also stressed that though one major performance indicator of the Commission is massive involvement in sports activities, the potential to win medals for the country would not be shunned. 

While promising Government's continued support to the federation in particular, the Director General urged the federation to work hard towards winning medals for the country in international competitions.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Adamu Erena told the Director General that he was in his office to inform him of the programmes of activities of the federation. He added that the Director-General's Squash Cup Competition was concluded last week in Abuja; adding that exceptional players would be selected for the All-Africa Junior Squash Championship (AAJSC) holding in Egypt.

Adamu Erena who pledged the federation's aspirations to make Nigeria proud in international competitions solicited Government's support in the preparation of its players for major events. 

The winners of the Director-General Squash Cup Competition were offered cash rewards of N50, 000.00 each and the runners-up got N30, 000.00 each from the Director-General.
