Cross River State - CRS NUJ Inaugurates Press Week Committee

The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Cross River State Chapter, has inaugurated the 2013 Press Week committee at Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, Calabar. The Nine-man committee members are, the former Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Omini Oden (chairman), Mr. Judex Okoro (secretary), Mrs. Mary Eniang, Comrade Uduak Ikang, Mr. Frank Odey, Mrs. Herrietta Nyong, Mr. Lawrence Mkpama,  Mr. Otei Oham, and Mr. Nsa Gill, as members. Performing the inauguration, Comrade Ndoma Akpet, the chairman NUJ, Cross River State Chapter, said the constitution of the committee and subsequent inauguration were timely to cover the years that the NUJ chapter had failed to observe the press week, explaining that with this plan, the state was about to witness a grand ritual of the Union, necessary uplifting the image of the Union and building goodwill among critical stakeholders and segments of the society.

He said the initiative was also in fulfillment of his electioneering campaigns to take the Union to the next level, with the appointment of worthy members into committees to help enthrone the needed transformation. He announced the committee's terms of reference as follows: "To design, chart and implement the activities of the 2013 press week, of the Cross River State Council of NUJ. "To present such plan as a report to the congress via Software Copy (SWC), for approval and upon approval, the committee was to call for inputs from members and committees of the council toward implementing the activities of the week. "Establish contacts with the public, raise funds, arrange venues of the various activities and ensure that the council host a befitting press week and Identify members of the public, who deserve to be honoured for the various categories of awards", among others.

In an acceptance speech, the committee chairman Mr. Omini Oden, lauded the Union Chairman, Mr. Akpet, for the appointment, emphasizing that his acceptance to serve in the committee followed his resolve to maintain a mutual relationship with the Union at all times and assured the union of his determination to ensure a successful press week in few months time. While highlighting the significance of the Press, Mr. Oden, noted that without the press, politicians, the public and private sectors as well as development agencies, would not strike the successes they have attained and enjoined all to cooperate with the committee to make the week a huge success. In attendance were the Commissioner of Information, represented by Mr. Dennis Utang, Director, Public Relations, Ministry of Information and Mr. Olugbolahan Somuyiwa, the new General Manager NTA, Calabar.

In his remarks, Mr. Somuyiwa said that the event was his first official duty since he assumed duties in the State and appreciated the State serene and alluring environment. He promised to give the forthcoming press week, a local and nationwide coverage.  Mr. Judex Okoro, Chairman, Sports committee of the Union, used the forum to announce that the union was making preparations to kick-off the monthly media walk, a jogging exercise aimed at keeping members fit and in preparation for the upcoming first South-South media game for the zone, which he said would be hosted in Calabar.  The event also featured the launch of veterans' corner within the premises of the centre. Among those who sat at the corner after the launch were Somuyiwa, Dr. Okpo Ojah and Chief Victor Effiom.
