In view of the spread of gastroenteritis in neighbouring States, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka has announced that government has put in place measures to prevent it from spreading into the Gateway State.     The commissioner who said this in a press statement today in Abeokuta highlighted the measures to include sensitization campaigns on prevention in all communities across the State, provision of emergency supplies and distribution of potable drinking water in susceptible communities.     He added that government was also embarking on construction of public toilets in communal places such as markets as another preventive measure being taken in this direction.      Soyinka said though contagious, gastroenteritis could be prevented by observing personal and environmental hygiene, cooking food thoroughly, boiling drinking water and ensure that pit toilets are far away from sources of drinking water.     “The virus can easily spread from one person to another by close contact because of its presence on the person’s hand especially after being to the toilet. Surfaces or objects touched by the infected person can also allow transmission of the virus which can be passed on if the infected person prepares food” the Commissioner remarked.     He therefore enjoined members of the public to observe these simple rules of hygiene and where necessary, take immediate steps to report any case of the disease to concerned agencies to avoid spread.
