As part of efforts towards arresting the menace of flooding and its attendant destruction of property during rainy seasons, The Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), has commenced the unblocking of culverts and slaps in the metropolis.

The exercise was to ensure the free flow of storm water and to avoid over flooding during the fast approaching rainy season.

CUDA boss, Mr. Gabriel Egari, while inspecting the exercise said Government was commencing the unblocking of slaps and culverts early enough to ensure that residents were not exposed to the traumatic effect of flooding, which had been causing fear on some residents during the rainy season.

Mr. Gabriel Egari lamented that, despite repeated warnings and appeals for residents to avoid dumping of refuse into drains, some people have continued violating and flouting Government's directives.

This, he noted, had led to the incessant cases of flooding, which had left many homeless, with property worth millions of naira destroyed.

The Executive Secretary, therefore announced that a surveillance team had been put in place to arrest and charge defaulters to court for dumping refuse into the drains.

He said the team had since commenced work, adding that they would be reporting in the early hours of the morning and late in the evening when residents were known to dump their refuse.

Mr. Egari also appealed to the residents in the metropolis to avoid patronizing those who collect refuse, using wheel barrows, since according to him, those wheel barrow scavengers emptied their waste into the drains.
