Cross River State - Pension Association to Make Life Better for Retirees

The Association of Cross River State Local Government Pensioners is set to make life better for its members and remove the fear of retirement from serving Civil Servants.

The State Chairman of the newly inaugurated  Executive council of the Association of Cross River State Local Government Pensioners, Comrade BB Okposun, disclosed this in Calabar, while on a courtesy call to the Cross River State President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE) Comrade Godwin Ayendi.

Comrade Okposun said the hopelessness associated with life in retirement was responsible for the large number of mutilation of records by civil servants who would rather die in service than retire at the appropriate time.

According to him, the Association was formed to meaningfully engage retirees after retirements as well as assist them enjoy their lives as pensioners.

Okposun, a onetime President of NULGE in Cross River State explained that the Association has drawn up a programme that would not only cater for its members but pursue their welfare in the offices they retired from.

The programme covering economy, health, education, consultancy and loan scheme, among others, would ensure that they remain active after service, and to extend their lives beyond five years after service.

He appealed for support from the State NULGE and public-spirited individuals to enable the Association set up the loans scheme where pensioners could access soft loans to solve their personal problems.

Comrade Okposun commended the NULGE President for his support to the Association and his effective leadership of the State branch of the Union, which he said had given Cross River State chapter, a voice at the national level.

Responding, the State President of NULGE, Comrade Godwin Ayendi commended the Association for the initiative, saying he was not surprised as the Association Chairman has a track record of good leadership, going back to his tenure as a visible State President of NULGE in the 1990s.

He assured the Association of the support of NULGE, saying, the loan scheme especially, would be wholesomely embraced by the Union as it would touch the lives of majority of Local Government Pensioners.

Members of the nine-man Executive of the Association who accompanied the Chairman on the visit included the Vice Chairman, Comrade Cletus Nkom, General Secretary, Peter Ozah, Assistant Sec, Vincent Modor and the Treasurer, Comrade Ignatius Ntui.

Other Executive members were the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Patricia Asuquo, Provost, Comrade Isoni Isoni, Auditor I, Comrade Martin Agba and Auditor11, Comrade John Agbor.
