POGO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) are offering visiting research fellowships at centers in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The fellowship program is open for developing countries scientists, technicians, graduate students (PhD) and postdoctoral fellow's centers in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Study Subject(s): The fellowship is awarded in

• Fixed-point time-series observations (e.g. contributing to Ocean SITES, ChloroGIN, Antares)

• Large-scale, operational biological observations including biodiversity (e.g. Continuous Plankton Recorder)

• Emerging technologies for ocean observations

• Coastal observations / Coastal zone management

• Ocean and coastal modeling

• Data management

• Argo floats.

Course Level: This fellowship is for pursuing visiting research program.

Scholarship Description: This programme is jointly funded by POGO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and is designed to promote training and capacity building leading towards a global observation scheme for the oceans. The Programme has been a success for ten years, with a total of 136 fellowships awarded since 2001.

Duration of award(s): The POGO-SCOR Visiting Fellowship programme will only provide funds for a maximum of a three-month period. If an applicant is able to secure a longer visit with the host supervisor, this is acceptable, but the fellow will need to find additional funds for his/her stay beyond the first three months.

What does it cover? The stipend stipulated in the successful applicant's award letter will automatically be the "standard" amount shown in the above table. The accommodation estimate quoted by the prospective host supervisor at the time of application is for preliminary information only. If an increase to the stipend is required due to more costly accommodation, the fellow can apply for an increase. If the cost of living for the city where the fellowship will take place has a cost of living index significantly different from the country average shown in the table, the stipend offered may be adjusted according to the Consumer Price Index of that city.

Selection Criteria: The Selection Criteria involve a number of factors including:

1.Quality of the application;

2.Relevance of the application to the priority areas identified in the Fellowship Announcement (Argo Floats; Fixed-Point Time-Series Observations; Large-scale, Operational Biological Observations including Biodiversity; Emerging Technologies for Ocean Observations; Data management; Coastal observations/ Coastal Zone Management; Ocean and coastal modeling)

3.Evidence that the training will lead to capacity-building with potential lasting impact on regional observations; and,

4.The need to maximize regional distribution of the awards.
