The Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, has suspended all forms of union activities (both staff and students) in the institution indefinitely, after an emergency meeting of the council held on Friday, February 6, 2015.
.
In a statement from the Information Unit of the polytechnic, signed by the chairman of the governing council, Victor Ebomoyi, it read: "This decision was taken by the governing council of the institution after reviewing the series of disturbances by the staff unions that had disrupted normal academic activities over the last three years.
.
"The polytechnic's governing council, at the meeting, had, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 5 (1) of Decree 33 of 1979, and other enabling laws establishing the governing council and the management of the polytechnic, in a unanimous decision, directed the indefinite suspension of all forms of unions (staff and students) activities forthwith."
.
The statement noted that the council, in arriving at the decision, cited "unbridled strike actions and violent protests by these unions, which had not made it possible to graduate any student in its full time programmes since 2012; serial infringement of the public service rules; polarisation of the students' union, as well as polarisation of trade unions into pro and anti-management."
