Minimum wage: NLC directs councils to negotiate with govs

LAGOS – THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has directed its 36 state councils and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, to immediately commence negotiations with the state governments on implementation of the new minimum wage Act and ensure that workers' rights especially as regards salaries were not short circuited.

NLC in a statement, yesterday, reiterated that the strike for the full implementation of the minimum wage was only suspended and not called off, warning that any "attempt to observe the prevailing agreements in contravention will provoke a strike action without further notice."

A statement by Chris Uyot, NLCHead, Information & Public Relations, commended workers and the Nigerian people for their commitment, steadfastness and support for suspended the three-day warning strike on the struggle to implement the National Minimum Wage.

It said:"The strike has only been suspended to allow for the implementation of the minimum wage agreements signed with the federal and state governments as well as implementation by the private sector. "

This should be a one-time off fight. Why must NLC suspend the strikes when their requests have not been treated?
