NORTHERN elders, under the umbrella of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), yesterday, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for jettisoning a six-year- tenure proposed to the National Assembly, while defending the current practice of two-term tenure system.

The elders pointed out that the six-year single tenure, as earlier proposed by Jonathan, would have created more problems than providing concrete solutions to the nation's myriad of unresolved problems.

According to a statement by the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, "President Jonathan's decision to suspend the submission of the bill on his proposed single tenure is a mark of his sensitivity to public opinion and mood of the nation."According to him, "all (that) Nigeria needs is a leader, who would inspire cultural renaissance by rewiring the politics, by re-engineering our sense of justice, make mercy smarter, hope more strategic, and dare the rest of Nigerians to follow."

They insisted that "a democracy on triple foundation of justice, liberty and common decency, is bound to produce leaders who would have abiding faith in the judgment of the people and exercise power that is humane in its spirit; moral in its purpose; and wise in its uses, for the common good."

Citing examples from the International community, Sani argued: "most nations practice two terms for purpose of providing incentives for motivation towards excellence and to make allowance for fresh blood at the helm of affairs."

He, however, said that the single tenure would put both the good and the feckless in the same bracket, thereby removing motivation as an instrument of its management.

"Nigerians are also human beings, who can be managed for performance by purposeful leadership. Single term, restructuring or forms of government, cannot be the solution to the myriad of Nigeria's problems," Sani said.

As President Jonathan really dump the six-year single tenure? Only yesterday, it was in the news that Jonathan was lobbying his loyalist to support his agenda for submission to the house of Assembly.
