Delta govt hands over 40 schools to owners

  Beginning from the next academic session, Delta State is set to hand over 40 secondary schools to missions and communities, their original owners.

The exercise to return all missionary schools is also coming at a time when approval had been given by the state government to renovate 55 schools and building of 10 new model primary schools in the state.

According to the state commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Patrick Mouboghare, all teachers of the affected schools would be transferred to other public schools, where there were shortages of academic staff.

Speaking in a Programme on Radio Delta, Na So We See Am, Professor Mouboghare said there would be gradual phasing out of students in the schools before the final handover.
For instance, in September, the missions, owners of the schools, will admit the JSS students,he said.

The commissioner said the development would stimulate healthy competition in education, adding that parents, who complained of low standard, could now have a choice for their children.

To maintain standard, the commissioner said all illegal schools and those without laboratory or standard playfield would be closed down.
