UK Demands Accountability Of Funds From INEC

 THE British government has told the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to render an assessment of the impacts of its various assistance to the commission on the conduct of this year's general elections.

The Head of Governance of the British Department for International Development, Dr. Garth Glenwood, who made the request yesterday in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Commission, explained that the move was to contribute to efforts by the DFID to do a review of happenstances during the polls for the benefit of future elections in the country.

He said: "We are here to review the atmosphere it (our assistance) has created and also to look forward into the future and to hear from INEC and others how we could help over the next few years when there will be elections, not just perhaps the cycle of federal elections, which has just been finished.

"We need to get first hand opinions from the key actors.

Responding, the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Abdulkadir Oniyangi, lauded the DFID for assisting the Commission when it really needed it most.

He added that the assistance contributed to the widely acclaimed successful election.
