Breaking News: House of Reps Tells FG to Suspend Fuel Subsidy Removal

The emergency plenary session by the House of Representatives on Sunday (8th January 2012). Most  speakers on the floor have so far backed the motion which asks that the federal Government suspend the removal of fuel subsidy. There are indications that the motion will be passed overwhelmingly

Those who have kicked the removal of subsidy cut across party lines. Representatives from Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), Action congress of Nigeria, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) have at the time of this report  supported the motion.

All those who tried to speak for the removal were either heckled or shouted down by other members. They include Mulikat Adeola-Akande, PDP, Oyo, who failed in her bid to be speaker of the House;  Yakubu Barde from Kaduna State' Ndudi Elumelu, PDP Delta and Arua Arunsi from Abia.

Sources hinted that while the senate is seen as ally of the removal of subsidy, the House had showed a lot of resistance even bofore it went on break.

Those who have spoken against the removal of subsidy include, Eziuche Ubani, PDP, Abia, Femi Gbajabiamila, minority leader, Aminu Suleiman, PDP, Lowarse Herman, PDP, Benue; Sanni Madaki, PDP, Kano, Khadijat Bukar, ANPP, Yobe; Garba Mohammed , minority whip, Ibrahim Rafiu, PDP, Kwara;, and Makinde olarotimi, ACN, Osun.

The theme of their submission centered on the the insincerity of the executive, lack of sensitivity to the impact the action would have on the masses, and the security implications that would arise from the impending unrest.

Madaki who warned of impending doom said there are ominous signs occasioned by the action that reminds Nigerians of what happened in 1966. He tagged it bad politics and bad economics.
Ibrahim noted that five years after the price of diesel was deregulated, no palliative had been felt.
Bukar on her part urged the executive branch to focus on insecurity and not compound the problems of the people.

You can say that again. The amazing thing about the session was that it was held on a Sunday. According to reports, this is the first time in the history of Nigeria that lawmakers had a sitting session, on a Sunday.
