 As Govt Raises Panel To Clean Petroleum Sector

THE reforms sweeping the Ministry of Petroleum Resources got a boost yesterday as a special task force was raised to scrutinize governance and control in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other parastatals in the ministry.

A statement by the Group General Manager of Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Dr. Levi Ajuonuma, in Abuja yesterday, said the committee is charged with the responsibilities of reviewing all management controls within NNPC and other parastatals; designing a new Corporate Governance Code for ensuring full transparency, good governance and global best practices in the NNPC and other parastatals; designing a blueprint for separating policy from operations in NNPC and other parastatals; setting Key Performance Indices for NNPC and other parastatals.

Others are to design a blueprint for eliminating all rent-seeking opportunities and arbitrage in the NNPC system; design a blueprint for professionalism of management and personnel in the NNPC and other parastatals; design a road map for transition to the PIB and work with external consultants as may be required to produce a report within the next working 30 days.

Members of the Special Governance and Controls Task Force are Mr. Dotun Suleirm, of Accenture and an advocate of good governance, (Chaiman); Alhaji M.I. Yahaya, former MD of Union Bank, Mr. Basil Omiyi, former MD of Shell,  Mallam Mahmud Isa-Dutse, Chief Raymond Ihyembe, former MD of Afrikbank,  Dr. Ayebaemi Spiff, Mr. Ernest Ebi, former deputy Governor of the Central Bank,  Mairo Bashir, Mr. I k Osakwe, Mr. Mac Ofurhe, former director of DPR and Lois Machunga.
