QuoteThis administration recognizes that we have several challenges as a nation and we are working on resolving these as best we can. But there is some cheering news in the fact that our economy verifiably grew by 7% during the first half of this year.

Now that we have this momentum, we are not going to rest on our oars. This government has set out plans (which I have kept you abreast with on this page) to aggressively develop infrastructure, reform the power sector, create opportunities for our people to be employed through stimulating industrial growth among others.

We have taken steps to give support for the bail out of the Textile Industry and effective funding for the real sector of our economy. The expected end result is to grow the economy by at least 10% by the end of 2012.

Only four years ago we were celebrating a 4% economic growth and now we have a growth of 7%, so this target is certainly within reach and as we all work together we will hit this milestone.

Remember the key words are WORK and TOGETHER. When we bear this in mind and practise it, it is my experience that almost nothing will be impossible to us as a nation.

QuoteThe other day, I encouraged you my fellow country men to be optimistic about the future especially as regards electoral reforms and free and fair elections in 2011. I demonstrated that such optimism is based on factually evidenced progress in statute and structures on the ground. But that is not the only area for which we should be optimistic.

As you may have read, the Office of the Attorney General has begun the process of prosecuting those involved in the Haliburton bribe scandal. It serves our country no good to shield corrupt individuals or corporations.

From inception this administration gave a FREE hand to all anti corruption law enforcement agencies to perform their duties to the fullest extent permitted by law.

I sincerely want to urge my fellow citizens to be optimistic and believe in Nigeria as ultimately expectations tend to be reflected in reality, so if we expect and believe the best of Nigeria our expectations are likely to become reality.

QuoteLike most of us on this page, I read the details of the 2011 election time table released by INEC through the media. I am happy that the release of the time table has generated a lot of interest and comments from several quarters.

This is how it should be: We should have discourses and debates so as to engender the culture of dialogue and deep inquiry.

To me INEC is living up to its expectations but the major ingredient for free and fair elections in 2011 remain you and the role you will play.

The following are urgent things we all must do:
(a). Register to vote
(b). Encourage others over whom we have influence to likewise register. And finally
(c). Prepare to come out and vote for the candidate of our choice.

Don't stay home and think that your neighbour would do it, remember that bad governments are elected by good people who do not vote. And also be assured that rather than a consensus of the political elite producing leaders at all levels in 2011, what is expected is that it will be a consensus of the people of Nigeria as expressed in their freely given votes in a free and fair election that would produce leaders in 2011.

Nigeria Will Be What Nigerians Make It

Dear friends and fellow Nigerians,

I have said before that Nigeria needs to be tied to her great potential rather than being tied to her past and the main focus of this administration has been to enable that environment which will allow the great potential of Nigeria to be realized.

On her way to realizing her foreseeable great future, it will be rather naive to expect that Nigeria will not meet with resistance from people who would prefer to make her a prisoner of her past. You see, in life, there are two ways you can think. Some thinking can be likened to a computer accessing it's own memory. Other thinking is deeper and more sustained and can be likened to a computer accessing the World Wide Web. The first type is shallow, and is based on the past memory stored somewhere and draws from a limited body of knowledge that is cut off from the mainstream and can quickly become stale because it does not take into consideration that society is organic and grows with the people as they mature. The latter is a deeper thinking which connects to other deeper thinkers who are in tune with current trends and mood and reflects the potentials of a people. This is the type of thinking that builds great nations, great leadership and an even greater followership.  This has been fundamental to paradigm shifts in nations, moving them from underdeveloped to developing and eventually developed status.

Fellow citizens, we must not mistake or be mistaken, Nigeria will be what WE make it and not what OTHERS say it will be. We have already come together as one indivisible nation. Please let us shun detractors who would prefer us to stagnate in this unacceptable state. No one or people can stop Nigeria and Nigerians from arriving in that home of the great and happy future that is our destiny.

QuoteBy Nigeria's certification with the highest civil aviation rating by the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority, we've no choice but to be a regional aviation hub being the only country in our region with this certification. Thus, I've approved the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu to an International Airport enabling it take advantage of the expected increase in air traffic.

QuoteAs we progress towards our 50th anniversary as an independent nation and a transition in 2011, one thing we as Nigerians have to note is that if we must have better results  in the next 50 years, we need to change the way we have always done things. For instance, we can no longer rely on individuals to drive peace and progress in Nigeria. We need to over the next 50 years concentrate on building strong institutions and systems that will drive our transformation to a greater and better nation. This is because individuals come and go, but institutions and systems remain behind. Also, whereas individuals do change depending on their moods, whims and caprices, an institution is stable especially if it is built and operated on the rule of law that is anchored on fairness and justice.

QuoteOne of my greatest goals in government is to restore the dignity of the Nigerian nation  and her citizens. I grew up at a time when Nigeria was led by a man I would classify a specimen of gentle-manliness. Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa led a government that saw Nigeria stand tall as a nation  that was not divided along narrow interests.

As a teenager, my patriotism was further fired up by that phrase from General Yakubu Gowon to the effect that 'to keep Nigeria One is a task that must be done'. General Gowon made that statement over 40 years ago, but it is as true today as it was then. Nigeria is one Nation and it is our determination  to keep it so. The biggest task before us in the now is to build this Nation of many peoples into an indivisible Nation where the people united  in one will be greater than the sum of all her constituent parts. We must make the "We the People" call as enshrined in the Supreme Statute of our land, the constitution, come to life in words and deed. Dear Compatriots, my primary goal in government which must not be mistaken is to return Nigeria to "We the people".

QuoteYou may perhaps have heard about the flood disasters affecting parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states. Before I travelled for the U.N. General Assembly meeting, I had cause to personally visit the affected areas to sympathize with the victims. I saw first hand the extent of the damage and I immediately ordered the army corp of engineers to mobilize to the locality and commence repair works.

I have also this week authorized the release of 1.7 billion Naira as an intervention grant for the affected areas. The grants are to be expended on reconstruction of damaged roads, culverts and bridges; scour inspection and survey of piers and abutments of the severely eroded bridge across the Sokoto River; and urgent after-flood protection study of the affected areas.

I hereby call on all Nigerians to remember the victims and survivors of this tragedy in our prayers.

Today, 1st of October 2010, in commemoration of the Nigerian 50th (Golden Jubilee) Independence Anniversary, the address delivered by President Goodluck Jonathan was noted on his Facebook page as quoted below:

Goodluck Jonathan on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 2:15pm

QuoteBUILDING ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF UNITY AND PROGRESS: AN ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN ON THE OCCASION OF 50TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS TODAY 1ST OF OCTOBER 2010.

Fellow Citizens,

Today, 1st October, 2010 marks the 50th Anniversary of our independence from Britain. It is with a deep sense of humility and gratitude to the Almighty that I address you this morning. On this day in 1960 the heroes of the nationalist struggles and all Nigerians were full of hopes and dreams. The citizens of the new country danced in colourful celebration of the newfound freedom. Nigerians were filled with expectations as the Union Jack was lowered and the green-white-green flag was raised in its place. A new country was born. A new journey had started on a road never taken before. The future was pregnant with promise.
