Anambra South: INEC okays Uba as PDP candidate

The controversy raging over the rightful People's Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for re-run  Anambra South senatorial election has been laid to rest with Independent National Electoral Commission, INIEC, recognising   Senator Andy Uba as the lawful candidate of the party.

The Court of Appeal had ordered fresh election for Anambra South senatorial district following a petition by All Progressive Grand alliance, APGA, candidate, Mr Chuma Nzeribe, who alleged anomalies in the last election, which was won by Senator Uba.

INEC in a statement, said there should be no controversy over who the authentic candidate of PDP was, since it was just organising a rerun of an election which the Court of Appeal had ordered based on a petition by one of the aggrieved candidates in the last election.

INIEC said it cannot admit new candidates for a disputed election, as the law  was clear on the matter, adding that based on the laid down rules, the candidate of PDP remains Senator Uba, who is contesting against Mr Nzeribe of APGA  and others, who had earlier taken part in the last election.

The statement said INEC as an unbiased umpire will always act within the tenets of the law, irrespective of the personalities or parties involved.

With this, all is now set for the election scheduled to take place tomorrow (Tuesday).

Already security has been beefed up with the police deployment of security to the state to ensure free and fair election.

INIEC also assured that it had put all necessary logistic in place for a hitch free exercise.
