THE Managing Director of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr Yinka Marinho, yesterday warned all users and operators of waterways in Lagos to be cautious and adhere to the rules and regulations of LASWA during the Easter celebrations.

He said the warning became necessary because some operators and users often ignore the laid down rules guiding waterways operations in the state.

His words: "You don't jump or dive into the beach or water as the depth may vary and there can be unseen dangerous things such as shallow water, broken glass or other sharp objects.

"Always use appropriate safety equipment for all your activity and consider the dangers of using inner tubes and other floatation devices, because they can be carried away by currents or blown by the wind into deep water and may not keep you afloat."

Marinho also warned people against consuming alcohol because it may severely impair ability and judgment. "If you have been drinking, think twice about your safety and those you may put one's at risk," he said.

He advised all parents and guardians to always supervise their children closely when near open water at all times.
