BENIN— FORMER Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan not to merge government agencies and parastatals as recommended by the Steve Oronsaye committee in order not to further increase the unemployment rate in the country.

Owie who also commended the Federal Government for the attention given to federal roads in the country, noted that hundreds of Nigerians working in the banking sector had been sacked, hence, merging government parastatals would worsen the unemployment situation, which was capable of increasing crime in the society.

He said: "I want to urge Mr. President to keep the Oronsanye report on merger of parastatals in the cooler. As we are speaking now, most banks in Nigeria are sacking hundreds of their staff. A hungry man is an angry man, they say. To merge agencies and parastatals now is a way of sending more Nigerians to the already congested unemployment market.
