River tanker tragedy deaths now 124 - FRSC

The death toll from the fuel tanker explosion at Okobe in River state last week is now 124.

According to an update by the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Rivers state, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, "As at noon today 16 July, the record of deaths collated based on additional deaths in the hospitals stands at 124. We are still battling with the actual injury figures as a lot of victims were transferred from one hospital to the other which could result in multiple counting.

"Some victims initially went home for traditional treatment while others headed for some private clinics. We will work with other agencies and the Rivers state government to collate the actual figures. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. We also wish those injured quick recovery."

A petrol tanker collided with three other vehicles on Thursday July 12 at Okobe on Ahoada -Mbiama on the East -West road in Rivers state around 6:30am. Residents rushed to the scene and were scooping fuel from the fallen tanker when it exploded, killing 93 on the spot.
