Oyo flood: government to demolish houses on water ways

 The Oyo state Ministry of Regional Planning and Urban Development have embarked on the demolition of over 40 structures obstructing water ways in Ibadan the state capital as part of measures to avert future flood disaster in the state.
Commissioner for Regional Planning and Urban Development, Kafayat Adeojo, who led excavators to the site, said the demolition exercise covers the entire 11 local government areas in the capital.
She added that the demolition became necessary to give free passage to heavy volume of water when it rains to safeguard lives and property.
  Some of the structures penciled for demolition were said to have been weakened by previous floods that ravaged the area.
  The commissioner urged people to consider the greater good and look beyond the momentary pain occasioned by the loss of the structures.
  She added that the government is committed to protecting the environment in line with best practices for tackling climate change.
The commissioner for Information and orientation, Bosun Ladele however warned against indiscriminate refuse dumping in drainages, streams and water ways, as severe penalties will henceforth be handed to defaulters.
  The exercise, according to the commissioner, will continue for two weeks.
