The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, on Sunday said the kidnapping of the wife of the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly showed that the nation must embrace state police.
Ikuforiji in a statement said state police could check lapses that existed in securing the nation.
The OSHA Speaker's first wife, Muiba Salam, was abducted in Ejigbo, Osun State, last Tuesday by unidentified gunmen who chased her car and abducted her as she attempted to escape.
Security sources however, disclosed that the Ogun State Vigilance Service carried out the arrest of the kidnappers and the rescue.
Ikuforiji said, "Credit must be given to the members of the Ogun State's private vigilante group that displayed immense courage and patriotism to thwart the plot of the criminals.
"What this act of bravery underscores is the urgent need for our nation to embrace State Police, which is capable of checking the lapses that presently exists across our great country.
"A centrally controlled police force as we have it today cannot solve the myriads of security challenges that face us as a nation anymore."
The Speaker congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his conunterpart in Osun State, Alhaji Najeem Salaami on the successful rescue of the Speaker's wife from the kidnappers.
He said, "We give glory to God for preservingthe life of Mr. Speaker's wife throughout the harrowing five days that she spent when she was held hostage by the criminals.  We also thank God for saving her life during the gun duel between the kidnappers and the members of the vigilante group that rescuedher when the criminals were planning to ferry her across the border in Ogun State."
