Workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have petitioned the government over the alleged sale of staff quarters, raising concerns about job security, welfare, and housing rights. The affected workers claim that the corporation is disposing of residential properties originally designated for its employees without adequate consultation or alternative housing arrangements.
The petition, submitted to the Ministry of Transportation and other relevant government agencies, accuses the NRC of acting against the interests of its workforce. Employees argue that the sale of the quarters not only disrupts their living conditions but also violates previous agreements that guaranteed staff accommodation as part of their employment benefits. Some workers who have occupied these properties for years fear they may be forced into displacement without sufficient notice or compensation.

According to sources within the railway sector, the sale of staff quarters is part of NRC’s broader asset monetization strategy, aimed at raising funds for infrastructure development and operational improvements. However, critics argue that such measures should not come at the expense of workers’ welfare. Labour unions within the NRC have threatened to take further action, including protests or legal measures, if the government fails to intervene.
Industry observers note that the privatization or commercialization of government-owned assets is not uncommon but it must be handled with transparency and fairness. They stress the need for clear policies that protect workers from abrupt changes that could negatively impact their livelihoods.
In response to the growing outcry, the government has promised to review the workers’ grievances and engage with NRC management to explore possible solutions. As tensions rise, employees are calling for a suspension of the sales process until a resolution that safeguards their interests is reached.
