FG grants scholarship to maths competition winners

Federal Government has granted scholarships to winners of the Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition, who emerged last week.

Chief Executive of National Mathematics Centre, NMC, Prof Adewale Solarin, who disclosed this at the prize giving organised by Promasidor Nigeria Limited, in Abuja, said the centre had granted scholarship to winners of the competition, who desired to study Mathematics to Bachelors degree and Post graduate levels.

"NMC will give scholarship to winners in junior and senior secondary categories, who want to study Mathematics at BSc level. Mathematics is part of our everyday life, which knowledge is employed in solving some of the deepest puzzles in life. Unfortunately, students still have the phobia for mathematics as a subject, and this had brought about their dismal performance in examination."

The three best winners in junior secondary schools were a JSS 3 student, aged 11, Akintokun Samuel from Ota Total Academy in Ogun State, who scored 96 points, and went home with the gold trophy, a laptop and N300,000.

Second was Omole Ayobami, a 13-year old JSS 3 student from Bibo Oluwa Academy in Ilesa, Osun State, with 93 points, the only female in the top 20 winners, who went home with the silver trophy and N200,000 cash, while the third winner, Akinwande Boye, a JSS 3 student of Greater Tomorrow College, Agbalaku in Ondo State, won the bronze trophy and N150,000.

In the senior secondary school category, a 15 year-old, SS 2 student from Iganmode Grammar School, Oju Ore, Ogun State, Benjamin Uwa, with 96 points went home with a laptop, a gold trophy and N300,000, while Henry Aniobi, 16 years in SS 2 with 95 points from the Nigerian Turkish International School, Kano, came second and was given a laptop, silver trophy and N250,000.

Third prize winner, 14 years old Shorinwa Olaoluwa from Graceland International School, went with a bronze trophy, a laptop and N200,000.
