RETIRED Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Rev. Jasper Peter Akinola, Sunday reflected on the nation's "tortuous history" and concluded that its unity is "very fragile." He said the country rests only on "oil" from the Niger Delta region.

Rev Akinola said in the last 50 years, the nation has been labouring with the task of "patching up" the 1914 forced unity of all the constituent parts on the basis of oil, adding that should the black gold cease to flow, Nigerians will go their separate ways.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun the recruitment of over 360,000 adhoc workers for the voter registration, INEC chair, Prof Attahiru Jega said yesterday.

He said INEC had "fully developed new registration software that is completely owned by INEC" to make multiple registration impossible.

Jega urged the 63 parties participating in next year's elections to make the revised 2010 Electoral Act their companion.

He warned that any breach of its provisions would not be condoned.

He urged the party leaders to pay attention to the changes contained in the statute, especially the provisions on submission of list of candidates, grounds for substitution of candidates, and general procedures and regulatory powers of INEC, with regards to party congresses, conventions and conduct of primaries.

Jega spoke in Lagos at an interactive session with party officials from Lagos, Ondo, and Osun states.

The forum was organised by INEC in conjunction with the International Republican Institute.

He was represented by the National Electoral Commissioner in charge of Information and Publicity, Chief Solomon Soyebi.
