Military no longer threat to Nigeria’s democracy – IBB

Former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, has stated that despite the myriad of security challenges confronting Nigeria at the moment, the nation's democracy can be said to be safe as it can no longer be threatened by any military intervention.  "I can say without equivocation that our democracy faces no danger from the military.

"As I said in 1991; military coup is no longer fashionable," Babangida said yesterday while delivering a lecture at the graduation of 20 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja.

He spoke on the theme, 'The Creation of National Defence College; 20 years after."

He said the college which was created by his administration to serve as a breeding ground for nurturing and creating new leaders for the Nigerian Armed Forces, has contributed to national development in the inculcation of values and ethics that support democratic rule.

He urged the college to lead other institutions in generating solutions to Nigeria's problems in defence and security.

"The NDC should move into simulation and strategic learning as an area of emphasis in the future. This should lead to the establishment of a centre for strategic-level gaming of serious problems confronting Nigeria," he said.
