Number Plates Policy Not For Private Vehicles – LASG

The Lagos State Government has said only commercial vehicles plying the state roads are affected by its directives on the use of number plates.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. KayodeOpeifa, said  irrespective of the state where private vehicle owners obtained their number plates, they are free to move on Lagos roads.
Opeifa gave the explanation on Sunday in a statement by the ministry.
He said, "Number plate is unified all over the federation. Government has never made any pronouncement that vehicles with other states' number plates have been banned from plying Lagos roads.
"Only vehicles operating as commercial public transport will have to obtain the state's number plates before being allowed to ply Lagos roads. This is necessary to enable government to have adequate information about such vehicles.
"To ensure the safety and security of lives of the people in the state, Regulation 41 sub-section 1 of the Lagos State Road TrafficLaw stipulates that no person shall operate or be caught operating a commercial vehicle without having obtained a commercial vehicle operator licence from the Lagos StateGovernment."
Opeifa said  every licence issued would be given a "distinct number which shall be painted conspicuously on the front and rear part of the vehicle or in any other manner asmay be prescribed by the Ministry of Transportation."
The commissioner said, "The position of the government is that any commercial vehicle used for public transportation purpose within Lagos must obtain a permit from the government. In addition, the owner of such vehicle must have the vehicle registered in Lagos State.
"Regulation 43, sub-section 1 of the Law, says a vehicle shall not be used or operated for commercial purposes unless it is registered as a commercial vehicle with the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency."                   source:The punchng
