BENIN—THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has condemned  alleged interference by state governors in the affairs of state universities across the country, saying the prevailing situation was affecting academic activities negatively.

Coordinator of Benin zone of the union, made up of the University of Benin (UNIBEN); Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma; Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka; Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Dr. Sunday Ighalo, faulted the manner in which the Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University of Technology, RUST, was appointed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

He alleged that due process was not followed in the re-appointment of Prof. Baritone Fakae, claiming that the VC came last in the interview conducted for aspirants to the position but that two of the five persons were fraudulently disqualified to pave way for Fakae to be among the three shortlisted for the governor to pick from.

He said:  "They impose their will on the universities. They want to determine who becomes the cleaner, they want to determine who is Vice Chancellor, they want to determine everything in the university."
