 Statistical data has been described as an instrument critical to planning socio-political and economic development of any nation as it provides a reliable platform for evidence-based decision making. Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation in the Ogun House of Assembly, Hon. Akanbi Bankole stated this today at a stakeholders forum on HB No22/OG/2012, a bill for a law to repeal Statistics law 2006, establish the State Statistical System, the State Bureau of Statistics and other incidental matters.

   Hon. Bankole explained that because of the crucial role statistics played in global development, the House of Assembly would do everything to support the creation of the Bureau and redouble its efforts in ensuring the speedy passage of the bill into law. Thanking the stakeholders for their quality contributions, he said when established, the Bureau would go a long way in enhancing research, planning and development across the State.Speaking, the National President, Nigeria Association of Statisticians, Mr. Mohammed Tumala represented by a former President, Mr. Christopher Okafor, lauded the State for bringing legislation to bear on the production of statistics in the State, saying that this gesture would enable the users of data have easy access to statistics as granted by law.     Dr. Tumala said the creation of the Bureau was essential at it would be part of the National Statistical System, based on the quality of statistical inputs from the State.Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun noted that key agencies and ministries that have direct links with the Bureau had been included to have a formidable body, adding that other stakeholders would also be accommodated.
