Germany Desire Second Kzakhstan Victory

Germany will be without suspended midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger when they meet Kazakhstan again on Tuesday in World Cup qualifying, but they may have a true striker in the line-up for the first time since last year.

Schweinsteiger picked up his second yellow card of the campaign during Germany's 3-0 win in Astana Friday, in which he scored the opening goal, and will miss the Nuremberg game.

Coach Joachim Loew must now decide whether to replace him with Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Guendogan as in last month's friendly in France.

It could help Guendogan's cause that he is a former Nuremberg player, but Loew also Saturday nominated Dortmund teammate Sven Bender who has recovered from flu.

"Of course I would be delighted to play. But I am not 100 per cent sure," Guendogan said.

Up front Germany played without a true striker for the third time in a row Friday but Loew may want to test the form of Mario Gomez, who was injured for several months last year, if the Bayern Munich player recovers in time from a thigh muscle injury.

The scheme without a true striker has worked well for the Germans, with Mario Goetze moving up front Friday as against France and scoring the second goal.

"We have many players who can play on this position, strikers or attacking midfielders," said Schweinsteiger, adding that the change of system allows for more flexibility.

Loew appears to make no real distinction between a striker and a attacking midfielder.

"We will always need a forward who plays in the centre on the same line as the defence," Loew said.

Apart from deciding on his game plan, Loew must tell his players not to drop concentration, as during some stages in the second half Friday, on Tuesday.

"There is always a danger that if we win away from home it remains in the heads of the players. We must remind the players that we play at home and that we will only win if there is dedication and seriousness," Loew said.

What can go wrong with a lack of fighting spirit was highlighted last autumn, when Loew's players famously squandered a 4-0 lead in the final half hour in a 4-4 draw with Sweden.

Those were the only dropped points for Germany so far in group C, which they lead with 13 points from five games. Sweden are second on eight points, with Austria and Ireland another point behind. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
