Ogun State - Curb encroachment on school lands, OGHA tasks stakeholders

Worried by the unwholesome activities of land speculators who had been encroaching illegally on lands belonging to public schools in Ogun State, the State House of Assembly has urged relevant stakeholders and concerned agencies to step up measures to halt the illegal acts.     The Chairman, Education Committee in the House of Assembly, Hon. Mafe Adeyinka gave this assignment today while speaking at an interactive session with Officials of the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as well as Teaching Service Commission.     According to him, officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and technology need to collaborate with their counterparts in the Ministry of Physical Planning to find a lasting solution to the menace of land speculators who had been encroaching on lands belonging to public schools.     Hon. Mafe explained that members of his committee were appalled by the illegal encroachment on lands belonging to public schools in different parts of the State, directing the Education Ministry to furnish the committee with a comprehensive list of affected schools for necessary actions.     Responding, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela disclosed that his Ministry had been inundated with of letters from Principals and Head Teachers of affected schools, explaining that relevant agencies of government had been contacted to ensure that all illegal structures erected within the premises of such schools were demolished.     Similarly, the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board- SUBEB, Hon. Mufutau Ajibola condemned the illegal encroachment, pointing out that in some cases, heads of some primary and secondary school had been battered by the land speculators when they attempted to prevent them from encroaching on the lands belonging to their schools.     As a way out, Hon. Ajibola disclosed that the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had directed that perimeter fencing of all primary schools in the State should be done, adding that work would soon commence on the project.     Speaking on the activities of his Board, Ajibola remarked that 376 schools were being renovated, while another 124 were being reconstructed, stating that the work had reached 97% completion.
