Briefing the journalists after the Federal Executive Council Meeting, the Information Minister, Mr. Labaran Maku, said that the Minister of Works came to Council with a memorandum to seek approval for the construction/rehabilitation of 13 Nos. roads nationwide.

The contracts were categorized into "B" and "C" during the procurement process.  He said that the group "B" Category comprised of the rehabilitation of Vandeikya-Obudu-Obudu Cattle Rand Road Phase I in Benue and Cross River States; construction of Mbasise-Ngwa Road in Imo and Abia States with bridges at Imo River Phase I; the construction of Abriba-Arochukwu-Ohafia Road in Abia State Phase I; the rehabilitation of Makurdi-Gboko Road Phase I: Wannune-Yandev Section in Benue State; the construction of Ohafia-Oso Road in Abia and Ebonyi States; the rehabilitation of section 1A of Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Kontagora-Makera Road Phase I in Sokoto/Kebbi/Niger States; and the reconstruction of Section 1 of Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Kontagora-Makera Phase 1 Road.

The category "C" comprises of the rehabilitation of Kunya-Kanya-Babura-Babban Mutum Road Phase 1 in Jigawa State; the construction of Zing-Yakoko-Monkin Road in Taraba State;  the rehabilitation of Alkeleri-Bauchi Road in Bauchi State; the construction of Aguoba-Owa-Mgbagbu Owa-Ebenebe Road in Enugu State; the construction of Offa by-pass in Offa LGA in Kwara State; and the construction of Ikot Ekpene Border-Ada-Owerii Dualisation Section 1, Phase 1 in Akwa Ibom, Abia and Imo States.

After deliberations, the Council ratified the President's anticipatory approval for the award of contracts for Phase 1 of Category "B" and "C" projects to various contractors in the total sum of N47,813,407,007.35, with various completion periods.

Maku said the Minister of Power presented another memo to seek Council's ratification of the President's anticipatory approval for the acquisition of multi-user license and multi-spectral satellite imagery.  After deliberations, the ratified the president's anticipatory approval for the award of contract for the acquisition and utilization of multi-user license and satellite imagery of Nigeria in favour of Messrs Infoterra UK/EIT, in the sum of N3,690,513,750.00, with a completion period of 24 months.

Maku said the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development through a note apprised Council of the 5th Ministerial conference of the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) held in Lome, Togo from 12th to 14th December 2012.

And that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration apprised council of the report on the area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory held on 16th March, 2013.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs apprised Council of the report on the State visit of the President to the Republic of Cote D'Ivoire, 1st to 2nd March, 2013.

Also, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development apprised Council of review of Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) independent audit report on Nigeria's solid minerals industry 2007 to 2010.

There was also another note from the Minister of Mines and Steel Development which apprised Council of the Nigerian delegation's participation in the 19th Annual Investing in African Mining Indaba held from 4th to 7th February, 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa.  The Information Minister said that Council took note of all the appraisals.

Maku further told journalists that the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, and the Minister of Police Affairs, briefed the Council on the progress and challenges of his Ministry in the year, 2012.
