FG Inaugurates Team For Construction Of Medical Warehouses In Abuja And Lagos

The Minister of Health, Prof.C.O.Onyebuchi Chukwu has inaugurated Project Management Team for the construction of Central Medical Warehouses in Abuja and Lagos.

 

He noted that the provision of appropriate warehousing facilities for medicines and other health commodities has been a challenge in Nigeria adding that the commodities require specific storage conditions to maintain their potency and pharmacological effects until they reach the consumers.

The Minister who was represented by Dr. Evelyn Ngige, National Coordinator, National HIV/AIDS Division in the Ministry said that the Federal Medical Stores, Oshodi is currently the only national storage depot for all medicines and other health commodities procured by the Federal Ministry of Health.

He explained that the project is the collaboration between United States for International Development (USAID) and Global Fund to assist the Government of Nigeria in the area of provision of standard pharmaceutical warehousing will in no small measure boost the healthcare delivery services in Nigeria.a

He said that the purpose for inaugurating the Project team is to facilitate the smooth implementation of the collaborative effort and to ensure prompt execution of the project for the benefit of all Nigerians.

The term of reference of the Committee among others is to advise the Minister of Health on the requirements for an efficient and effective medicine and other healthy commodities storage and distribution in the country, to oversee the construction of works for building of warehouses at Federal Medical Stores Oshodi and Premier Medical Stores, Abuja and to ensure that the project is implemented according to specifications
