RE: AVIATION MINISTRY SEEKS TO TAKE OVER ISSUANCE OF OPERATING LICENCES FROM NCAA

Our attention has been drawn to a news story under the above headline in today's edition of ThisDay Newspaper. The story makes very strong claims that the Newspaper is in possession of documented evidence of attempts by the Ministry of Aviation to strip the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) of its autonomy and removing the responsibility of issuing Air Operator Certificates from the Regulatory agency.

We hasten to declare that the story is completely false, malicious and a clear attempt to cause unnecessary tension in the sector. It is also intended to cause disaffection against the person and office of the Honourable Minister of Aviation by portraying her as a meddlesome interloper in the affairs of an autonomous agency.

To be sure, the ministry places very high premium on the autonomy of the NCAA as the Regulator of the sector and will not do anything wittingly or unwittingly to whittle down its powers. In fact, the new Aviation Policy that is currently being fashioned out is intended to strengthen the NCAA to place it in good stead to perform its regulatory functions as well as safeguard its autonomy.

Any suggestions (as contained in the ThisDay report) to the effect that the Ministry of Aviation is seeking to take over the duty of Issuance of AOCs from the NCAA and in the process, tamper with the regulatory autonomy of the Agency is therefore patently false, misleading and inherently mischievous. We however wish to urge journalists to always cross-check their 'facts' from the relevant authorities and to be wary of those who, for very unclear motives, bandy false documents around.

The general public is hereby advised to ignore the false information contained in the ThisDay report as there is no iota of truth whatsoever in the entire gamut of the story.
