Federal University of Technology Owerri now training centre for Nigeria’s nuclear power.

                        The long-term national energy security can only be achieved through the effective development and harnessing of a diversified basket of energy options, taking into consideration, the needs of future generations which made the Federal Government to activate a nuclear power programme and approve the road map for its implementation.

The Chairman and CEO of Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Franklin Erepamo Osaisai and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) made this point in Owerri during FUTO's 31st public lecture titled, "Nuclear Power Development in Nigeria, Partnership Building for Sustainable Programme Implementation."

Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, the secretary to the Government of the Federation laid the foundation stone of the Centre for the Nuclear Science and Engineering Laboratory in the University.

Dr. Osaisai said that the implementation of a new Nuclear Power Programme was a daunting task which required a serious national commitment as well as proper national institutional frame work to ensure sustainability.

He stressed that the requisite structure for the prosecution of national nuclear power programme are being put in place by the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission in partnership with other relevant stakeholders and international development partners.

The Lecturer, Dr. Osaisai said that the main message was to emphasize that the planning implementation and management of a national power programme was a serious task which can only be successful, if all relevant national institutions can make their respective inputs.

He confirmed that Federal University of Technology Owerri was one of the partnering institutions with the responsibility of hosting a new Energy Research Centre, the Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies and Training.  He pointed out that it helps in the production of electricity and other sectors.

Dr. Jemina Shuara, a permanent secretary who represented Senator Anyim Pius Anyim said that the Federal Government's approval and reconstitution of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) was a clear indication of plans to enrich and strengthen the Commission to be complemented with the integrated plan for manpower training capacity building and research Infrastructural development to sustain the programme.

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri, Professor Asiabako thanked the dignitaries in the University for the foundation laying ceremony of the Nuclear Centre Research Institute.

He thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for using Federal University of Technology (FUTO), as one of the pilot institutions.

Professor Asiabako said that the aspirations of the Federal Government in this critical area of national need be realized successfully and on time.

Well it's good to know work is been done in certain higher institutions in Nigeria. Some universities in Nigeria are simply useless.
