Ekwueme, Clark, Gbonigi, others meet on Boko Haram, corruption

Leaders of the Southern Nigerian Peoples Assembly will tomorrow begin a two-day conference on some issues affecting the country including the threats posed by Boko Haram Islamist sect and corruption, among others. It was gathered that the meeting, which holds at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos and ends on Monday, was called to enable the leaders to form a common front over the ongoing constitution review.

A statement signed by Senator Anthony Ogungbemi Adefuye on behalf of the conveners yesterday said the conference will be presided over by the leader of Yoruba Unity Forum, Bishop Emmanuel Gbonigi while Dr. Alex Ekweme will lead the Southeast delegates and Chief Edwin Clark the Southsouth delegates. "The conference will attract seasoned administrators and astute scholars of note and they will brainstorm and agree on such an enduring constitution that will return Nigeria to her glory", it added.

Discussions at the conference will focus on the constitutional review by the National Assembly, amnesty for Boko Haram sect, the national insecurity, corruption and national development. Other topics for discussion include the national centenary dialogue and renegotiation on the basis for national unity and the emergency preparation for the prompt arrest of the anticipated flood disaster in 2013 by the relevant sectors of the economy among others.

The conference is the third of its series. It debuted and was held in Ibom Hotels and Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in July 2012 under the chairmanship of Chief Edwin Cark. It was followed by another held in Enugu under the chairmanship of former Vice President, Alex Ekweme. A communiqué is expected to be issued at the end of the conference.
