S’South CAN, Ijaw group seek support for Jonathan

CHAIRMAN of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) South-South region, Archbishop God-dowell Avwomakpa, has called on all Christians and politicians in the region, regardless of affiliation or denomination, to rally round and support President Goodluck Jonathan's administration.

Speaking in Warri, Delta State, Avwomakpa said that whatever the political class and religious leaders say concerning Jonathan's administration will go a long way in promoting or tarnishing the administration.

The cleric, who also said there are attempts by some political class to frustrate Jonathan's government, urged them to desist from being a "black-sheep" in the region. "Let us join hands to support Jonathan's administration.

In a similar vein, Arogbo-Ijaw National Front (AINAF), an amalgamation of various associations of the Ijaw-speaking people in the coastal; Ese-Odo Local Council of Ondo State, have blamed the current spate of insecurity facing Nigeria under Jonathan's presidency as the handiwork of some people from the northern part of the country "who are not comfortable with leaving political power in the hands of a southerner."

In the communiqué read by its president, Chief Pere Gamfo and signed by 10 other leaders, the AINAF drew a line between the terrorists' agitation in the North and activities of the Niger Delta militants, saying  those calling for amnesty for the Boko Haram sect because ex-militants are enjoying it, are drawing wrong parallels.

According to the group, "we are aware that some misguided persons have warped the theory of amnesty for Boko Haram as they often draw comparison with the Niger Delta situation. May we state unequivocally that both are not comparable.
