Anambra State Varsity’s VC Expresses Confidence In Nigerian Students

The Vice chancellor of Anambra State University, Uli, Fidelis Okafor, has expressed great confidence in Nigerian students against the backdrop of declining academic quality in the country. [caption id="attachment_66358" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Vice chancellor of Anambra State University, Uli, Fidelis Okafor"][/caption] Speaking in a function organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to honor his administrative prowess at the University Auditorium, he challenged government at all levels to provide universities with adequate funding and infrastructure and see if necessary and heart-warming results will not be achieved. The vice chancellor, who was admitted into the life membership caucus of NANS noted that proper funding from both federal and state government can go a long way in steering academic excellence in schools. He said the declining standard of education in the country is a challenge occasioned by the absence of required academic environment as there are abundant talent and brains in the country. He said, "We have the talents, We have the brains, what is lacking is the environment and the wherewithal to put these things into maximum effect." The National President of NANS, Donald Onukogu commended the University for the functional Information Communication Technology Center otherwise known as Afri-Hub in the university which is the only one amongst the institutions of higher learning in the state that runs the latest western certificate courses. He called on Nigerian students to work hard and overcome the menace of cutting corners in academics. Some lecturers who spoke on ways to improve academic standard in schools said it is a matter that requires a concerted effort. For students, academic improvement is a matter of getting the right teaching staff, upholding the ideals of studying steadfastly and availability of necessary infrastructure. The students of the university though praised their vice chancellor and the state governor for their efforts in helping improve learning standard in the school but said more effort is still needed in the area of employment of standard lecturers, provision of adequate accommodation for students and making available grants and financial support to deserving students.
