Many people wept yesterday as a container-laden truck crushed the driver of Eko meat van and his aide to death on the ever busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

For many hours, motorists were held in traffic gridlock on the highway thus making passengers to trek to their various destinations.

According to some eye witnesses, six other people were also injured in the accident, which happened at about bout 9:30am.

It was learnt that the truck conveying the 20- feet container rammed into the Eko meat van while some policemen attached to the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) were chasing a commercial motorcycle operator on Agege motor road.

According to Sola Ogunsote, an eyewitness, the truck driver was trying to avoid killing the commercial motorcyclist when the accident occurred.

Ogunsote said as the driver was struggling to avoid killing the motorcyclist, he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the meat van.

When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Lagos Mr. Tunde Sobulo, said he was not briefed that the police were chasing the commercial motorcyclist when the accident occurred.

Sobulo said the van was driving against traffic and crashed into the oncoming truck whose driver lost control, given the heavy load it was carrying.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of the truck driver was unknown, efforts are still been made by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Authority (LASTMA) and police to control the traffic.
