The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Ogun State has warned owners of private schools in the State not to engage in any activity that could sabotage government’s efforts towards improving standard of education. Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Barrister Segun Odubela who handed down this warning in a press statement, noted that some school proprietors are obstructing the operations of the team set up by the State Government to clamp down on illegal schools and conduct the head count of students in private primary and secondary schools.T

he Commissioner said the warning became imperative to debunk the insinuations that executive members of the State chapter of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) are already holding consultations with officials of the Ministry on the issue. The Commissioner clarified that at no point did officials of the ministry hold any meeting with officials of NAPPS in the State, talk less of directing them not to pay any fee.

“We want to state categorically as a ministry that at no point in time did officials of the ministry hold any consultation with any members of NAPPS nor its EXCO on issue of not paying renewal fees to the government” he said.He therefore enjoined them to cooperate with the State Government officials on the matter as according to him, government would not hesitate to apply appropriate sanction on erring school proprietors.

It would be recalled that more than 160 illegal private schools operating in the State were clamped down during the “operation clampdown on illegal schools” held about two months ago.The exercise, Barrister Odubela said became necessary to check the spread of schools not having required structures and facilities needed to offer quality educational services, thereby damaging the future of the children.Odubela said during the exercise, it was revealed that some proprietors and their staff lack required formal educational training and were only interested in making money.
