Stella Oduah                        During exchanges with the media and civil society groups, questions were raised on the disparity in fares by foreign airlines operating in Nigeria; the need to increase tempo on the activities of contractors handling renovation of the airports; having a national hanger in Nigeria and introducing international flights in the schedule of the Enugu airport.

The media and others also sought to know the situation of things concerning Nigerian airways and compensation to families of victims of the DANA Airlines as well as power-cuts which interrupt flight landing operations; refusal to honour bilateral agreements and denial of right of operation to some international airlines.

In her reaction to the issues, the Minister elaborated that 60% in payment of compensation has been achieved by DANA Airlines; saying the Aviation Ministry is working hard to ensure 100% compensation to families of victims just like it wouldn't want a situation multiple payments to families of same victim.

The Minister also insists that, "The process of renovation of the airports is still ongoing. Therefore, there is still restriction of access to specific regions of the airports. There is also ample effort to create a strong and sustainable domestic carrier."

Stella Oduah said of surcharges being meant to bring about uniform regulatory policies of operations to ensure financial capabilities for airline operators. Irregular fares would not be encouraged.

While delivering his remarks at the occasion, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku posited that "In the aviation sector, developments by the present Minister has brought aesthetics to Nigerian Airports. New international airports and cargo terminals as well as new passenger bill of rights have been unveiled to align with the transformation agenda of President Jonathan."
