altOgun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has charged the newly sworn in Consultants on Local Government Affairs to rise above parochial politics and become unifying agents in their respective constituencies.

The governor said the responsibility for taking Ogun to unprecedented heights of development in an atmosphere of peace "now rests squarely on your shoulders". Amosun spoke yesterday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta during the inauguration of 20 Consultants on Local Government Affairs.

"The appointment of the 20 Consultants have been made to meet critical emerging challenges in the actualisation of our mandate. We seek to deepen and broaden our presence at the grassroots where most of our people live," the governor said.

According to the state helmsman, the Consultants will help monitor on-going projects in their localities, assess the impact of the projects and other programmes, relay feedback to the state government and complement the efforts of Local Government Chairmen, among others.

He urged the Consultants in the 20 local councils of Ogun State to eschew needless chest-beating and the temptation to see their elevation as a weapon to be used against real or perceived rivals.

Amosun told the Consultants not to regard their appointment as "job for the boys" or opportunity to malign the office of elected Chairmen of Local Government Areas. Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Consultant on Ewekoro Local Council Affairs, Mr Gbenga Ademosun, promised to justify the confidence reposed in them by the people of the state.
