Students, under the aegis of the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) and the police yesterday clashed in Ilorin.

Scores of the students staged a peaceful protest over non-payment of their 2009/2010 annual bursary allowance.

But the protest turned violent as the students in the early hours of yesterday prevented free flow of traffic in parts of the town, particularly the ever busy Murtala Mohammed Way and Ahmadu Bello Boulevard, the road that leads to the Government House.

Following the removal of his name from the list of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala is making desperate moves to return as the authentic candidate.

The Nation investigations show that the embattled governor started subtle moves last Tuesday evening to ensure that judgment favours him in the ongoing case over the propriety of his candidature at the Federal High Court, Ibadan.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comment that the nation's unity is fragile.

Obasanjo, at the weekend in Minna, Niger State, said "Nigeria's unity is at a fragile point that should not be toyed with".

But, Fayose, Ekiti Central Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate, said Obasanjo lacked the moral right to speak on national unity, having refused to enhance it while in office.

"He had opportunity when he was in power to take the initiative to correct the perceived imbalances in the polity, but he allowed it to slip away. He laid the foundation of the problems we are contending with today", Fayose said.

Consequently, from tomorrow, the Electoral Act 2010 forbids the commission from accepting withdrawal and substitution of candidates.

Yesterday, there was palpable fear in the major political parties as attempts were made to resolve disputes and crises that arose from the primaries conducted to determine the popular candidates for the various seats and positions.
