Key Responsibilities:

•    Supervises yard operations according to plan. Ensures that staff and equipment is organized in order to achieve high productivity levels with special focus on truck turn time and vessel crane productivity

•    Ensures yard clerks and equipment operators record and update all container movements accurately and timely

•    Provides supervision for subordinates that includes the following:

•    Instructs subordinates in safe working practices including wearing of PPE

•    Instructs subordinates in proper, standard operating procedures

•    Provides close supervision to subordinate staff, providing regular feedback and appraisals.

•    Has a regular meeting with subordinates, giving them current company information.

•    Counsels subordinates, up to and including discipline or termination recommendations.

•    Follows company management policies and procedures in the application of managing subordinates.

•    Participates in job path development for subordinates.

•    Identifies and solves problems and issues on a daily basis, usually of a routine or moderately complex nature.

•    Reports problems and issues to the appropriate Assistant Operations Manager as needed, especially issues of complexity or great impact on the operation.

•    Acts as a focal point for any yard operations issues.

•    Performs other related duties as requested.

Who we are looking for:

•    Requires a university degree/HND Operations Management, Logistics, Business Administration or related discipline.

•    Requires at least four to five years or more of strong supervisory experience in container terminal operations environment, or similar, related industry. Previous experience as a foreman, supervisor, superintendent or other similar position would be expected as a natural progression to this position.

•    Requires a high level of planning and organizational skills, has good leadership skills and excellent interpersonal skills, working with a highly diverse workforce.

•    Understands safety regulations, safe working procedures and safe materials handling procedures and follows safety and work instructions.

•    Has an in-depth understanding of

•    different types of vessels and their characteristics.

•    different types of cranes, equipment, heavy vehicles and their characteristics.

•    different types of containers and cargo and their characteristics.

•    different types of hoisting equipment and their characteristics.

•    different types of lashing and their characteristics.

•    Ability to work under pressure, anticipates potential problems and diagnoses, evaluate and resolve logistical problems as they happen in order to meet operational performance objectives and deadlines.

•    Have effective customer service skills.

•    Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills combined with good counselling and listening skills.

•    Well developed English oral, written communications and report writing skills. Also must have a working knowledge of the Pidgin English.

•    Has the ability to communicate operational instructions and information & is able to understand commonly used hand signals to communicate without radio system.

•    Has the ability to work as a team member and adhere to operational plans to achieve maximum productivity.

•    Has a valid Driving Licence.

•    Drive terminal trucks using safe driving techniques and safe parking procedures.

•    Requires capability to anticipate problems by recognizing the key issues in problems and creating contingency plans and alternative solutions.
