The Federal Government says it will soon establish a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to serve as the platform for the enforcement of all provisions of the Disability Act. Dr Habiba Lawal, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, made the disclosure while addressing participants at a UN High-level meeting on persons with disabilities at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday.
.
"In order to strengthen our commitment to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its optional protocol, both of which we have ratified, the National Assembly is working assiduously to ensure the passage of the Nigerian Disability Bill into law.
.
"When passed into law, it will provide for the education, health care and the protection of the social, economic, political and civil rights of persons with disabilities.
.
"In addition, the Act will provide for the establishment of a National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), which will serve as the platform for the enforcement of all provisions of the Disability Act,'' Lawal said.
